Learn how we do our carvings, baskets,
embroideries, calabashes,
and jewelry. See this movie
"how to make a basket out of jipijapa".
Whenever you come to visit our Maya Centre Women's Group gift shop, you would
walk through shelves, full of uniquely made arts from each of our members.
Each item represents hours of a mopan maya woman's handwork. Every day we
would be feeding our family, taking care of our children and do every work,
that needs to be done at our home. Between going washing in the creek, cleaning
the house and backing the baby, we would find time for us and our creative
art. For one women it would be slate carving, for another a basket, a designed
calabash, jewelry,
an embroidery or sewing of clothing. We learn our art as a young girl usually
from our na' (mother) or na'chin (grandmother), so the specialties
of our handicraft continues inside our family.
For special symbols and designs we would use ancient Maya gods, the Maya calendar and
national animals and flowers of Belize.
Whichever art you would be holding in your hand, it is a part of a Maya woman's
life.
