“How corn came into the world”

“I am going to tell you how corn came into the world.

When the earth was created there was nothing to eat or to drink.
The people decided that they needed something to eat.
They asked the gods, they asked the lord of the mountains where their food would come up, where they would find corn.

The rain god Chaak said:
— You are asking me your food, your drink — he said.
— Yes, we are asking fo it so that we can eat, so that we do not have to eat each other. That is why we are asking for corn. That is what we people should eat — they answered.
— Well, OK, look out — Chaak said — I am going to do it. Look out.

Chaak sent his lightning down with a heavy thunderbolt. The lightning struck a big rock. That rock, as big as a house, cracked.

Then Chaak saw that his helpers, the zompopo ants, were entering the crack at the foot of the rock.
Inside the rock they found corn. The ants started to bring it outside.

So Chaak saw that there was corn underneath the rock.
Now that Chaak knew that the corn was inside the rock he made a wider burst in the rock.

The ripe corn-ears had fallen from their stalks and the people entered the rock to pick up the corn.
They picked up the beautiful corn-ears that had not been burnt by the lightning. That is the white corn. They picked up the ears that had hardly been touched by the heath of the lightning. That is the yellow corn. They also picked up the ears that had been burnt red. That is the red corn. They also picked up the fully burnt corn. That is the black corn.

They brought outside a lot of holy corn, thanks to the help of the zompopo ants. That is why we must give the zompopo ants their corn: They found it for us. If it was not for the ants we would not be eating corn now, because a long time ago there was no corn.

This is how the corn came into the world.”
